This book is a concise abridgement of Minhāj al-Ṭālibīn wa ʿUmdat al-Muftīn by Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله, with additional points and further organization. Due to its clear wording, strong expression, and precise arrangement, it became widely studied, memorized, explained, and versified by scholars and students of knowledge.
The book covers the branches of Islamic jurisprudence according to the Shāfiʿī madhhab. Imām al-Nawawī’s Minhāj al-Ṭālibīn itself is based on al-Muḥarrar fī Furūʿ al-Shāfiʿiyyah, a major work in Shāfiʿī fiqh by Imām Abū al-Qāsim al-Rāfiʿī رحمه الله, who passed away in 623 AH.
Imām al-Nawawī praised al-Muḥarrar and its author, describing it as a work of precise research, filled with many benefits, and a relied-upon reference for verifying the madhhab. He mentioned that its author carefully followed what was authenticated by the majority of the scholars of the madhhab and fulfilled what he set out to do.
As for the reason Imām al-Nawawī authored al-Minhāj as an abridgement of al-Muḥarrar, he explained in his introduction that al-Muḥarrar was large in size, making it difficult for most people of his time to memorize. Therefore, he chose to shorten it to around half its size, making it easier to memorize while adding valuable benefits and important details.
The text of Minhāj al-Ṭālibīn by Imām al-Nawawī is regarded as one of the finest and most precise texts in the Shāfiʿī madhhab. It became a central reference in issuing fatāwā, and great scholars devoted themselves to teaching, explaining, and commenting upon it.
Manhaj al-Ṭullāb is therefore a highly beneficial and valuable work: small in size, yet rich in meaning. It is one of the important classical texts in the study of Shāfiʿī jurisprudence.
