Humility is the opposite of self-exaltation. It is the quality whereby a person does not elevate or exalt himself above others due to his knowledge, lineage, wealth, status, leadership, governorship, or any other worldly attribute. Rather, it is obligatory for one to “lower his wing” to the believers, showing them kindness and gentleness.
This was exemplified by the most honorable of creation, the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam), who treated the believers with immense kindness. He was so gentle and approachable that even a young girl could take him by the hand and lead him wherever she wished, and he would fulfill her needs without hesitation.
